  1. William Del Pilar's Locker Room Buzz - I must say, I must say, I saw a Foghorn Leghorn image online and it brought back fond memories of my childhood. For those that don't know, the big rooster was a colorful character. He had a Southern drawl that made everyone laugh. You'll see a few references here - and for those that are old enough to remember, I hope a chuckle. Nevertheless, there are some good notes crossing my desk at this midweek point. Let's not bore you with anymore childhood details and get to it! AFC BEAT Miami Dolphi...
  2. William Del Pilar's Locker Room Buzz - The season is heading towards the midpoint sooner than we realize. Week 6 is upon us and it's anyone's game for the Super Bowl. Fantasy owners are seeing certain teams playing well. The New York Giants, led by quarterback Eli Manning, making fantasy studs out of Domenik Hixon and Sinorice Moss this past week. Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, an unknown heading into the season, is improving as the season progresses. Then you have quarterbacks such as Seattle Seahawks Matt Hasselbeck a...
  3. William Del Pilar's Locker Room Buzz - I've been reading my fan mail - well, not so much fan mail as much as comments. Some are criticizing my honesty as I explained some of the "dumb" moves I've made this season in past blogs. Let me explain. Part of the fun of writing a blog is sharing good and bad times! It makes the good times that much sweeter knowing what you've overcome! If I were always right, I'd own a nice home, land, multiple cars, the latest in high-tech equipment and toys ... wait, I do own those items! All joking asid...
  4. Fantasy and reality post-mortem - My first year as a fantasy baseball expert has ended. Here are some lessons fantasy players learned - or relearned - from the 2008 fantasy baseball season: 1. When you see a positive trend, take a shot. Read: Take a chance on the Cliff Lees of the world. Any time you can pick up an undrafted pitcher who gave up just one earned run in his first 31 2/3 innings of the year, go for it. 2. Saves are still overrated. Closer stability took a back seat this year as 17 teams made a long-term, in-sea...
  5. Fantasy baseball notes (and more) - Whether or not your fantasy baseball league counted play from the Tigers-White Sox makeup on Monday and the Twins-White Sox play-in affair on Tuesday, the season is finally over. That means it's time to bestow some honors, confess some sins and pick some playoff winners. And if I end up half-naked in the Pacific again after another quick exit by the Phils, someone please have a nice, soft towel waiting for me. Fantasy baseball awards Fellow managing editor Tim Heaney has made his selections a...
  6. William Del Pilar's Locker Room Buzz - You go through many tough times in fantasy football, especially when you start New York Jets quarterback Brett Favre and you lose after he scored six touchdowns! I am dying in many of my fantasy leagues that I thought I would do well in, and I'm succeeding in some I thought I drafted poorly. My point is that there's a reason we play this hobby after we draft our teams; owners of Tom Brady are reeling, while owners of Jay Cutler are doing well. Why? When you lose a first- or second-round pick, ...
  7. William Del Pilar's Locker Room Buzz - It's midweek, so let's get down to what we know heading toward the weekend. So far there are no surprises outside the news we heard about Pittsburgh Steelers running back Willie Parker (knee) and the benching of St. Louis Rams quarterback Marc Bulger for Trent Green. I would not be doing my job if I did not state Tampa Bay Buccaneers wideout Joey Galloway (ankle) and New Orleans Saints wideout David Patten do not have positive updates. Let's get to it, and don't forget to do your weekly waivers...
  8. Tributes and spot starters - Two things before this week's topic. I, like many other fans around the country, said goodbye to Yankee Stadium last weekend via television, 3,000-plus miles away from my native New York. I won't repeat what I've already said in this space, but the Yankees' post-game tribute was the perfect send-off given the circumstances. The poignant team epilogue emceed by the forever-classy Derek Jeter gave the fans reason to smile in a lost season. I'll always remember the place where I fell in love with...
  9. William Del Pilar's Locker Room Buzz - It was a brutal weekend if you owned Philadelphia Eagles running back Brian Westbrook (ankle) or Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning. However some are continuing to enjoy the ride with Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler and wideout Brandon Marshall. Some blew up with Miami Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown and his five touchdowns - OUCH! I don't own him in any leagues but went against him in one - DOUBLE OUCH! It's early in the week; what has crossed my desk, and what does it mea...
  10. William Del Pilar's Locker Room Buzz - I have played this hobby for 17 years, going all the way back to 1991! Never in my years of playing have I had three drafted quarterbacks go down or benched within the first two weeks of the season. In the Fantasy Guru Expert League run by KFFL's good friend John Hansen, we drafted Tom Brady, Vince Young and Tarvaris Jackson. I know what you're thinking, but trust me, their legs (the latter two) make them solid picks. In two weeks we've lost them all! My current starter: Brian Griese! I have to ...
